The Actual Suggestion

People where too focused on how OP the Medusa NPC was at the release of 1.3. That they didn't take into account the usefulness of it's drop. The Medusa head needs to get nerfed. We all know the NPC Medusa needed some nerfs when 1.3 was released, But no one bothered to complain about the Medusa head because it was simply overpowered. Medusa's Head would basically be able to last mages all the way into the lihzhard temple due to it's usefulness. Should any Prehardmode weapon be able to do this? Oh hell no

Statistics
Type
Weapon
Damage 28 (Magic)
Knockback
2 (Very Weak)
Mana
4
Critical chance 4%
Use time 19 (Very Fast)
Velocity

Rarity Items - A nerf to Medusa Head and then some (3)
Those are the stats for the Medusa head. What I am proposing is a change to how the damage is handled. On a 1 Second Charge this weapon already deals double damage which seems like much for a prehardmode weapon. On a Full Charge the weapon deals triple damage. Thats 84 damage WITHOUT MODIFIERS being applied. I will admit this weapon is a great utility but it is basically to useful for a weapon obtained prehardmode. My changes are as follows

  • The weapon damage should be multiplied by 1.5 at a 1 Second Charge
  • Its damage should be doubled at a 2 Second charge

These changes will also not be active in expert mode to help give players a fair chance at using this weapon (Not sure about this but don't take this too seriously)

And then some

So a lot of us probably have not though about this but What use is the Medusa head in hardmode now? It might have a little usefulness here and there but it won't cut it now. That is why I wanted a Medusa head for hardmode
Introducing the Basilisk Head
This weapon would be a 1% drop from

Items - A nerf to Medusa Head and then some (4)

Its stats are exactly the same as Medusa's head except the rarity, sell price, and base damage
Its rarity is

Items - A nerf to Medusa Head and then some (5)

while its sell price is 3

Items - A nerf to Medusa Head and then some (6)

The damage of this weapon is 38 damage as to not make it overpowered. This weapon works exactly like the Medusa Head with the nerf, But you may be thinking
"Why choose a Basilisk Head you Items - A nerf to Medusa Head and then some (7)ING Items - A nerf to Medusa Head and then some (8)?"
Reasoning behind the idea of a basilisk head:
Basilisk have a killing glare?
I can also understand if you guys don't agree with this. Keeping the comments civil is the least you can do Items - A nerf to Medusa Head and then some (9)

I can see what you mean when you don't want the new item Items - A nerf to Medusa Head and then some (12)
It is just a simple thing to give hardmode mages a newer medusa head
I mean the basilisk head could probably get overpowered somehow

Both the gorgons and basilisk/cocatrices were mythological creatures said to petrify. The medusa head was referencing an act of a greek hero, who slew medusa and used her head to petrify the titan Atlas, leaving the heaven on his shoulders. The Terraria depiction of the medusa head is pretty acurate in it's strength, but the problem is that it's obtained too early on. Sure, it's a rare drop, but doesn't mean a lucky kid that RNGesus likes can't get it in a single kill. The basilisk head shall be a nice upgrade to the medusa head, and I feel like adding a stunning feature to the weapons would be a nice touch. After all, the true power of these creatures is not the glare itself, it's the petrifying that comes from it.

Maybe they could add a petrify buff where non boss/minboss/whatever I am forgetting
npcs would become petrified
The medusa head could petrify prehardmode enemies
While the Basilisk head could petrify prehardmode and hardmode enemies (Excluding Lunar Event enemies)

That's what I'm talking. Player debuffs are so pathetic. The best I can think off is daybroken, and it's amazing, but uncommon. But let's admit it, it's just a overgrown DoT. We need something new. Ichor debuff helps, as well as the confusion one for a bit, but that's all. We need a more creative debuff system, not just a wardrobe of DoTs. Imagine such weapon in events, that would make it so much useful. Just as the solar eclipse fast-as-heck vampires and possessed come flying towards you, you petrify them and let your minions do the job. It would be amazing with weapons such as the rainbow crystal staff, due to the heads being able to draw aggro better than a supposed set bonus that is just an aesthetic change, really. "Hey guys, I have Star Platinum stand!"

It seems that could get overpowered
I guess it could be changed as to not work in Events
But I like the idea of how DoT is in Terraria

Well, the petrify could last not as long the medusa NPC's attack. Once we obtain an enemy's abilities in video game, in general at least, it's abilities are weakened due to gameplay sake. You could make the petrify debuff last the half it does for the player on enemies. And maybe a quarter on hardmode enemies. That way, we can still have a convinient flash of time to dodge and prepare for a next attack, or in desperate situations, chug down a potion. To pathetic, but fast moving enemies, that would be like a 2 shot. Petrify, and let your minions rip 'em to shreds. There are many mobs in terraria that are mild annoyances, not threats. Be it to fast speed, wall-phasing, teleporting, ya name it. Tfw you're mining in underground hallow and these little Dr. Manhattan wannabes teleport all around you to annoy. Even worse when on ice hallow. These are mild annoyances by the time you get the basilisk head, so why not make them a little bearable? c:

Makes sense to me. After all, hitting a stone is harder than hitting quishy flesh. So yeah, it would make sense to reduce minion damage on the petrified NPC, if not reduce damage dealt to the NPC as a whole. If you think about it, there's an armor of stone coating the mob. It could also work on the player, making an overhaul on the petrify debuff as a whole.

I will probably update the thread after about 2~ pages of discussion and ideas

I fully support this. Not only does this balance the game and look promising for some new mechanics, but it also gives the player a reason to go into the underground desert. I still don't understand why they put so many enemies into the underground desert, but didn't give any unique drops other than two vanity helmets...

This could actually go somewhere Items - A nerf to Medusa Head and then some (25)
The hardmode desert does seem pretty useless except for light and dark shards
