🔪 How to Make Homemade Blue Cheese Dressing

This recipe is super simple, you don't even have to cook anything! All you need is your measuring utensils, a mixing bowl, and a whisk or silicone spatula.

This recipe should yield roughly 8 tablespoon-sized servings.

  1. Mix In a medium-sized mixing bowl, mix together ¼ cup of sour cream, ¼ cup of mayonnaise, and ½ tablespoon of white wine vinegar or lemon juice together first until nice and creamy.
  2. Add seasonings and blue cheese. Add 1 tablespoon of fresh chopped parsley and ⅛ teaspoon each of salt, pepper, and garlic powder as well as 3 ounces of blue cheese crumbles. Stir to combine. If you choose to, you can use the back of a spoon or fork to crush the blue cheese into smaller pieces. Doing this distributes the blue cheese crumbles more evenly throughout the dressing, and adds more tasty blue cheese flavor!
  3. Thin it out (optional). At this point, you will have a thick and creamy blue cheese dressing that is best used as a dipping sauce. To thin your sauce out for a thinner dressing consistency, simply add a couple of tablespoons of buttermilk (or milk, or water). Stir, taste, and adjust the seasoning as needed. Continue adding liquid in one tablespoonful amounts until you reach your desired salad dressing consistency.

Blue cheese makes a fabulous salad dressing for a wedge salad or a creamy dip for baked chicken wings. You can even use it for popcorn chicken or veggie sticks, the possibilities are endless! Enjoy!

💭 Tips & Notes

  • I do not recommend using Miracle Whip, it will alter the flavor of your blue cheese dressing.
  • I like to use good quality mayo like Duke's or Hellman's for the best flavor.
  • You may substitute garlic powder for fresh crushed garlic. Crush a large garlic clove, sprinkle it with sea salt, and work it into a paste. Use it in your recipe in place of garlic and omit the salt. Add salt to taste as needed at the end.

❓ FAQ

Why Is My Homemade Blue Cheese Dressing Getting Watery?

After sitting in the fridge for a bit, the mayonnaise and sour cream can start to separate resulting in excess liquid. You can pour some off if it is excessive, then simply whisk your dressing to combine everything once more.

How Long Does Blue Cheese Dressing Last?

For the best flavor, use your blue cheese dressing within 1 week. However, it is safe to eat for up to 2 weeks if stored properly!

How Do You Know If Blue Cheese Has Gone Bad?

Blue cheese is naturally stinky, but you should know if it has gone bad. If you see spots of fuzzy black or white mold or the cheese has hardened, it is best to grab some new blue cheese before making this recipe.
