7 best epilators for smooth pins and pits that last, with £200 off our winner! (1)

This article was updated in November 2023 to reflect recent deals and discounts, to ensure you get the best price for your device, as well as the top-rated expert pick.

It's obviously a personal choice, but if you’re looking to keep hair at bay for longer (because, let’s face it, who has the time for a weekly shave), you may want to consider your hair-removal options.

Waxing, shaving, plucking, IPL — there are so many ways to achieve a fuzz-free body these days that it can be tricky to navigate the ever growing jungle of hair removal methods.

Sure, shaving is pain-free, but it lasts two days max. Lasering is basically a financial investment at this point, and getting in your monthly wax appointments is like trying to buy Glasto tickets. Which is why you may want to turn your hand to epilating.

We tried a range of epilators in the Women's Health Lab to see which ones provided the best long-term results. Keep scrolling to find out why some devices really delivered on their hair-free claims, or grab a sneak peak below.

Best epilators for fuss-free hair removal

How does an epilator work?

Akin to waxing, epilators work by removing hair from the root. They use tiny tweezers that rotate to constantly pluck the hairs from your skin as you move the device over your body.

Because it works in this unique way, an epilator can pluck lots of hairs at once — even the small, fine hairs in hard to reach areas. Unlike shaving, which cuts hairs on the skin's surface, epilators remove the entire hair from the root, meaning it will take longer to grow back, leaving you smoother for longer.

How long does epilating last?

Most skincare experts agree that it if used both regularly and correctly, the results can last up to four weeks, which is a hell of a lot longer than shaving. Generally, you can expect to go at least three weeks without stubbly legs or pits. So it's a great gadget to invest in for the summer months when you've got more skin on display.

Does epilating hurt?

This really depends on your pain threshold and the area you are epilating. Bikini lines and underarms can be more painful than legs because the skin is more sensitive here. It's a good idea to open the pores up first by having a hot shower or bath. Some epilators can even be used in the shower.

How often should you epilate?

This totally depends on your body hair and the brand of epilator you're using. However, as mentioned above, most people can expect to go hair-free for around three to four weeks.

And as with all beauty products, consistency breeds results. Getting into a routine with your epilator will help your skin get used to this type of hair removal and the more you do it, the finer your hairs become so it gets quicker, easier and less painful. As the old saying goes, practice makes perfect – and epilating is one area where keeping at it pays dividends.

How we test

Every product that features a Women’s Health Lab Approved logo below has been tried out by a panel of testers, to see how effective they were at removing hair.

Our testers reported back on how much regrowth they spotted over a period of four and eight weeks of continued use, and how easy each device was to use.

This ergonomic, versatile epilator is the overachiever of its category. Among the arsenal of eight (potentially OTT) attachments is a face spa, an exfoliator, a traditional razor and a range of face brushes and caps.

Not only does it look très chic compared to the competition, but every member of our panel said it slowed down hair regrowth over the eight-week trial period, with immediate smoothness for all, too. From a technical perspective, it also excelled in our tests, navigating those pesky hard-to-reach patches while proving less bulky and more agile than others.

Where’s the catch? Some said the battery life could have been better — being queen bee is tiring work, after all.

After a weights sesh, the last thing we want to do is go home and hold a heavy epilator while we de-fuzz. This lightweight option does the job sans the arm ache, while the built-in light helps you catch even the tiniest of hairs.

We found there was some discomfort around the bikini line and underarm area (which were never going to be a walk in the park), but other than that, the pain level was more than tolerable. It also works equally well on both wet and dry skin.

This diddy epilator comes with a number of attachments, including a shaver head and trimmer cap. We found it was more effective than our usual hair-removal method and it was okay pain-wise (except on more sensitive areas, such as the underarms).

It is corded, which limits its mobility, but for the price it’s a great, compact option.

What is the best epilator in the world? ›

Braun Silk-Epil 9-flex

The Braun Silk-Epil is arguably the most famous epilator on the market and the first in the world with a fully flexible head, which makes for a smooth ride even over those tricky kneecaps and performed best compared to all the others when it came to my bikini line.

Do dermatologists recommend epilator? ›

"Epilators can be a good option for someone who is not a candidate for laser hair removal or gets irritation with depilatory creams and shaving," explains Marisa Garshick, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at New York's MDCS Dermatology.

Should you epilate your underarms? ›

Because regular epilation helps to stunt armpit hair growth, one of the most significant benefits of epilating over other modes of hair removal is that results last for weeks, not days. The more you epilate, the more you will reduce hair regrowth as hairs grow back slower, softer and thinner.

How do I get smooth skin with an epilator? ›

Run the epilator in an upward motion against the direction that the hairs are growing. This lifts the shorter hairs giving you a smoother finish.

Is it better to Epilate wet or dry? ›

We recommend that you use most products on dry skin, as wet hair tends to stick more to the skin. Also, if you are aiming to do an on-the-go session, try using the product on dry skin instead. Be certain that your skin is clean and completely dry before using the appliance.

Are expensive epilators better? ›

With any technology products, the more expensive it is the more features and advanced technology it has. Some of the more expensive ones have wider heads and better tweezers for a smoother finish. They also come with extra add-ons like a skin buffer or face epilator too.

Who shouldn't use an epilator? ›

If you're more sensitive or prone to pain, epilation might not be the best for you. On the other hand, if you're willing to stand some pain for less side effects, epilation might be better than waxing for you. Remember that what works best for your friends or family might not necessarily work best for you.

What is the disadvantage of epilating? ›

Epilators can Lead to Skin Redness

Depilation, which is the removal of hair from the skin, can cause redness or irritation. This is a common reaction, as the process can be somewhat abrasive to the skin. If you're planning to depilate, it's important to ensure that you're not in a hurry.

Is there any side effects of using epilator? ›

A person may get painful bumps and rashes around the pores for a few hours after using epilators. This generally resolves after some time. If you have sensitive skin, you may have severe rashes and boils. You may also experience some ingrown hair after using epilators and waxing.

What do you put on your pubic area after epilating? ›

Don't apply hair removal products directly to your genitals. Use a cold compress or fragrance-free and dye-free cream or gel to soothe and moisturize your skin after hair removal.

Is it worth it to buy an epilator? ›

In general, epilators remove more hair than electric shavers do. Although they can take more time and effort to use than shavers, they can save you time and energy in the long run. Because an epilator removes hairs at the root, you won't have to use it again for several weeks.

Can I epilate my pubic area? ›

Yes, you can use epilators in your bikini area. However, as the area down there is sensitive, it can irritate your skin and be more painful, if not used correctly. So, gently exfoliate the skin before using epilators and discontinue if irritation persists.

Why do my armpits burn after epilating? ›

Epilating pulls out hair from the root. Some after-effects like itchiness, redness or tightness after using your Philips epilator are normal, especially if you have sensitive skin. You may also see small bumps on your skin or experience a burning sensation. This goes away with time and is nothing to worry about.

Can you epilate underarms with Philips epilator? ›

You can use the shaving head of your epilator to shave your legs, underarms and bikini line. For the best result, move the appliance against the direction of hair growth, making sure that the head is in full contact with the skin.

What do you put on armpits after epilating? ›

Soothe your skin with moisturizer.

After rinsing off your skin, apply a non-comedogenic moisturizer. This can soothe newly epilated skin and keep dry skin from clogging your pores and hair follicles. Moisturize twice a day to ease any redness or inflammation from epilation.

Is an epilator better than shaving? ›

One benefit of using an epilator is that you'll get smoother skin, and the results may last longer than most other hair removal methods, like shaving, depilatory creams, or tweezing. Results vary from person to person, but you can expect smooth skin for up to 4 weeks.
